History of Nakane pig killing festival - July & September Months Only

Kuman people of Simbu

The Bugla Higu in Simbu Kuman dialog it says, “Pigs Hut”. The Kuman people of Simbu as a history of building clans long hut for accommodating pigs and human beings after a year hard work and harvest once every Christmas.

Yagl Higu in Simbu Kuman dialog it says, Men’s Hut. Where all male both young and old gather together for a purpose of guiding and protection of their families and clan for the future use.

Furthermore, in the event of cerebration chief leaders shouted, “Sippuuu” and ladies shouted “Haiyahhuuu”. The name Simbu comes from shouting “Sippuuu” during the colonial era.

Nakane is a secret language of Inaugl Tribe of Upper Simbu, Kundiawa Gembogl District called “Nakane” in Kuman dialog mean “My Language”.

Nakane Bugla Higu Festival

All dialog put together we named the festival called “Nakane Bugla Higu Festival” – Meaning “ALL OF US PIG KILLING CEREMONIAL EXCHANGE”

• Early in the morning, shouting from the mountain tops shining tree reflectors called Andy Paipai channeling tribes living nearby that Inaugl Tribe is hosting Nakane Bugla Higu.

• All five clans blow their bamboo flutes called Kuakumba channeling women or mothers to prepare food crops and pigs for the festival.

Nakane Singsing

• Nakane Singsing (Tabuno Iraglha) perform ritual before making fire and killing of pigs.

Fire making on top of the roof of long houses

• Nakane Singsing perform then two fire makers climb the pigs hut and on the roof starting making fire once the fire lit they brought it down to earth oven - Fire Making called Kitne Doga. On top of the roof of the long houses.

Killing Pigs called Bugla Kumba

• Killing Pigs called Bugla Kumba once the earth oven is flit with fire woods and stones, women are lined up with pigs for killing.

• Once all the pigs are killed with wooden sticks, chief leader from each clans appoint earlerly man to come with their bamboo knifes start butchering pigs called Bugla Togo ( Village Buthery)

• Once every activity from building pigs hut to the Ground Oven ( MUMU PIT) and called Bugla Kombuglo (Killing of Pigs) , all pigs are put into ground oven, cooked and prepare for distribution.

• Nakane Grand Chief will acknowledge and blessed their local, national and international visitors by addressing them in Nakane language called Kakaugo (Speech by Chiefs only) then pigs are disturbed to invitated clan members.

All raw food and cooked Pork is given to the Visiting tribes to bring home to their tubes and families and they will repay again in the same Ceremonial Grounds after two years. (Biannual)
