The Forgotten Islands & Beyond!

The Forgotten Islands represent the final frontier for diving in Indonesia. Officially known as the Southeast Moluccas (Maluku Tenggara), they form a 1,000 km long chain starting in Timor and extending all the way to West Papua. The Forgotten Islands are very remote and each year there is only a narrow window within which to visit them - during the period when the seasons switch from the Southeast winds to the Northwest monsoon. The prime month to experience the Forgotten Islands is November, when the weather becomes calm, allowing the adventurous diver to witness the most virgin diving in Indonesia. Our route on this trip will start in Tual from where we will sail into the heart of the Forgotten Islands. From there we will then head east to Kei, North Tanimbar, Pulau Dai, Babar, Amortaun, Nyata, Wetar, Alor then Maumere.

{ Excerpts from Alberto owner of Damai on his exploratory trip in April of 2012 }

Alor:
Well known area in Indonesia. Great for macro, we will be stopping in Pulau Pura and concentrating more around that area. Mandarin fish in Wetar: a place called Nautilus with very nice corals, unique formations of leather coral and a few giant clams.

Nyata:
Probably the best wall we know in Indonesia: impressive barrel sponges, really beautiful places are Amortaun and Moora. Atoll style; impeccable hard corals and great fish life.

Babar:
Seamount; lots of fusiliers, and very good fish action.

Tanimbar:
Still in exploration phase. We have a couple of dive sites and will be there a few times in the next years. So far we found two dive sites with good corals, slopes and a combination of white sand and coral patches.

Kei:
We go to a shallow reef north of the island of Bui, really nice. Great corals and plenty of fish action.

So in general:
The Forgotten Islands offer: very good visibility, very nice hard coral gardens, a few walls, and good fish action. Alor will balance the trip with more macro focused dives.
