WHALE SHARKS:
Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
Ningaloo reef is one of the world's largest fringing
reefs. The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, up to 40
ft long. They make regular visits like clock work to this reef system
every year from March to June, when the plankton rich waters draw
them close to the reef in search of food. Snorkeling is done from
day boats with the aid of a spotter plane, affording fantastic results
as swimmers are placed in the water in the path of these gentle
leviathans.
Placencia Belize
In the spring months of April, May and June the whale
sharks have a home in Placencia. They come to feed in the warm waters
of Belize so many days after the full moon. This is a lovely out
of the way place in Belize where you can dive the reefs and become
mesmerized as a gentle giant swims by. They have observed some very
unusual feeding strategies performed by these very large fish.
