ESPIRITU SANTO
Santo is the largest island in the group and most
famous for its scuba diving and for being home of the largest most
accessible wreck dive in the world, the SS President Coolidge.
Built in 1931, it was a luxury passenger liner for 10 years before
the military took it over and converted it to a troop carrier to
support the war effort in the Pacific. While entering the harbour
on the 26th October 1942, it struck two sea mines and sunk close
to shore not far from the main town.
Measuring 654' 3" (202m) x 81' (24m) and weighing
22,000 tons the President Coolidge is a huge dive site strewn with
military hardware and memorabilia of the World War II era. Sitting
in 60' - 230' (18m 60m) and accessible by both boat and shore diving,
10 dives on this one wreck is not enough to even begin to appreciate
the size and magnitude of this massive wreck. It has been said that
diving the President Coolidge is as close as one will get to diving
the Titanic!! Swimming past WWII trucks, jeeps, rifles, large guns,
while at the same time looking at the grand fittings of lights and
a fireplace, porcelain statues of an Elizabethan lady and unicorn,
or a swimming pool reminds you of the contrast of a luxury liner
turned troop ship.
Possibly
one of the Coolidge's main attractions is "Boris" the
400lb (200kg) grouper. Boris is the ship's mascot and every
day hangs around looking for food handouts. It's quite a sight to
see a 400lb fish being hand feed right in front of you.
Santo also has other wrecks, Million Dollar Point
where at the end of the war they pushed all the machinery off the
shore, There are pristine coral reefs, drop-offs, wall dives, shark
feeding dives, underground freshwater caves, and blue holes. You
will never get bored for things to dive on. A month would not be
enough time to see all there is to see.
Other attractions to Santo are custom villages, waterfalls,
underground cave adventures, tracking, fishing, and Champagne Beach,
a picture perfect white sand beach.
