  • Kungkungan Bay Resort has developed a reputation for pioneering a concept called FINE DIVING. This means that all of your time and energy can be used for diving, not wasted on transporting and dealing with your equipment. Fine diving also means that our dive guides can help you find and photograph the elusive animals you have only dreamt about seeing.

  • We have become world famous for CRITTER DIVING and indeed, we have many wonderful and rare critters. But we have many other excellent dives available. We have three World War II shipwrecks and one sunken Taiwanese fishing vessel to dive on. All wrecks are easily dived and are beautifully overgrown and teeming with reef life. Novice divers and experienced divers alike will find fun and exciting dive sites unlike anything they may have seen anywhere else.

  • Kungkungan Bay Resort is nestled on the site of an old coconut plantation on the Sulawesi coast of Lembeh strait. Located on the sunrise side of the peninsula, the view from the guest accommodations encompasses rugged Lembeh Island and the smaller Sarena Island. North Sulawesi enjoys a mild tropical climate with gentle breezes year-round. Daytime temperatures are generally in the mid-eighties cooling into the seventies at night.

  • Kungkungan Bay resort was specifically designed to achieve a pleasing aesthetic effect with minimum impact on the environment. By using local materials and traditional architecture and adding western style bathrooms and amenities the resort reflects the local Minahasan culture, while providing international standards of comfort, convenience, safety, and privacy.

DINING

  • Our distinctive restaurant and administration complex is centrally located for guest convenience and serves as a social hub before and after dives. Guest and Pro slide and video presentations are shown here both in the upstairs lounge area as well as in the central complex.

  • Many dive operations have food because it is necessary. At Kungkungan Bay Resort we view our food service as a time for our guests to recharge their bodies and their spirits. Our distinctive over the water restaurant building has become a local landmark for Lembeh Strait, Bitung harbor and the island of North Sulawesi. Local celebrities, high government officials and visitors from local villages all come to Kungkungan Bay restaurant to enjoy the view, feed the fish from our deck, and relax with a cold drink or a hot meals.

  • For our guests our restaurant also serves as a social center and entertainment area. Here our guests often share their slides from Lembeh and other dive destinations and when we have our special photo pros in residence they share their photographic tips and secrets with the guests. Our building is large and spacious so guests may join each other for meals at a large table and discuss the days adventure or opt for privacy at a table for two. Occasionally, members of our multi- talented staff will entertain guests with music using the local xylophone, the Kolintang.

  • Our restaurant is open 24 hours so you can eat whenever you're hungry. Our menu features western favorites as well as local Indonesian items. Our kitchen staff takes great pride in creating new items for our guests and our menu items are delicious. Your dive package includes all of your food (with a few restrictions). Some food and beverages items are hard to get in this part of the world. However, we have ice-cold beer (local and imported) wine from Australia, and of course tropical drinks with local fruit juices and rum. These local tropical drinks and local finger food are the center piece of our Resident Managers outdoor events. Whether on our lawn or on our pier, these evening events provide a chance to meet and mingle with some of our staff while enjoying great food and drink against a backdrop of an exotic and truly unique tropical hideaway.

FISH EXPERT & PHOTO PRO MONTHS

  • Because the Lembeh Strait is the home of so many unusual and rare underwater inhabitants, many of our guests wanted more than just diving, they wanted to know more about the creatures they were seeing and learn how to better capture these elusive beings on film. As a part of our Fine Diving program we have scheduled photo and fish experts at various times throughout the year. Because we limit the capacity of our resort for ecological reasons, when you visit during a specialty month you will have access to that pro to help you with camera settings, fish identification, observing unusual or rarely seen animal behaviors, or slide composition. You dive and spend time with these experts. Click on our Special Events page for further information.

LEMBEH STRAIT PRESERVATION SOCIETY

  • Dive sites worldwide are threatened by everything that goes in the oceans and that includes divers. Kungkungan Bay limited room capacity specifically to minimize the impact of divers on this relatively unexplored area of the ocean. However, as the Lembeh Strait has been discovered by divers from all over the world, our efforts to minimize environmental impact are not enough in the face of increased threats to the environment of so many rare and unusual species. Kungkungan fully supports the efforts, goals and methods of the Lembeh Strait Preservation Society and urges you to support its efforts. Since its inception Kungkungan Bay Resort has supported the Lembeh Strait Preservation Society with funding and assistance in formulating a set of by-laws for dive operations using the strait.
