Trip Commentary:
Prince Rupert to Juneau Trip; 8 Days/7 Nights Day 1 Make your way to Prince
Rupert. Board after 16:00 for a relaxing and beautiful dinner cruise to
Dundas Island. This area is considered by local residents to be THE hotspot
for fishing plus has some very nice dive sites and great kayaking opportunities.
Guests are welcome to go fishing that evening. Day 2 Our adventure continues
with a morning arrival at the Alaskan town of Ketchikan to clear Customs
and stretch our legs. Later in the afternoon we will visit the small and
extremely quaint Alaskan community of Meyers Chuck where the diving is
very good and the shore visit equally interesting. Day 3 Coronation Island.
Great diving. Incredible scenery. Amazing beaches. Day 4 Wooden Island!!
This is arguably the best dive in North America (although it can be weather
dependent). There will be lots of opportunities to go diving today as
well as doing some whale watching, shore hike and maybe even an evening
bonfire. The humpback whale behaviour in this area is usually quite awesome.
Day 5 Today is another great day with a stop at the stellar sea lion colony
at Yasha Island (and the chance to get way up close with either our kayaks
or your scuba diving gear). More grizzly bear watching. And a soak in
the Baranoff Hot-springs. Day 6 Wake up among the icebergs, waterfalls
and glaciers of spectacular Tracy Arm. Enroute, the crew will be keeping
an eye out for a snorkel/dive/kayak opportunity around a suitable iceberg.
Visiting Tracy Arm is an amazing experience and something that you will
likely not forget for a long time. Later in the afternoon we are planning
on a hike up a salmon stream and keeping our fingers crossed for a closeup
visit with "brownies" (which is what Alaskans call grizzly bears).
Day 7 Dive sites will likely include the wrecks of the Princess Sophia
and the Princess Kathleen in Lynn Canal. The Sophia is known as the worst
tragedy in the North Pacific (all 360 persons onboard lost their lives).
The Kathleen is an intact passenger liner laying on her side between 30
fsw and 120 fsw. Evening arrival in Juneau (Auke Bay). Day 8. Morning
disembarkation for either a connecting flight home or a shoreside stay
in Juneau (which is a neat and interesting place to spend an extra day
or two). Shore options include a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier, taking
the local tram up to the alpine meadows, a heliseeing flight or cultural
First Nations presentation (and rafting trip?) by the local Tlingit. Please
note that we operate with the philosophy that one of the best things about
expedition yacht cruising is the flexibility to change itineraries 'mid-stream'
and take advantage of changing conditions. For example, if the weather
is beautiful, and the winds are calm, we might suggest diverting to the
north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands for a tour of an ancient Haida
village, a stroll along a deserted 2 mile long west coast beach or the
exploration of a bird sanctuary. The above itineraries are intended as
an example only and our actual routing may be different. Notes on the
activities. There are some excellent dives on the outer coast of Alaska
as well as some very interesting wrecks in the Juneau area. We will likely
do 12 - 14 'feature' dives during an 8 day / 7 night trip. However, please
remember that these trips are the 'full meal deal' with lots of other
activities including kayaking, fishing, birding and shorehikes as well
as upclose viewing of icebergs, calving glaciers, spectacular scenery,
black and grizzly bears, humpback whales, orcas, natural hot-springs,
etc. Fishermen will have the opportunity to go fishing for salmon or halibut
from our small 8 hp skiffs. Please note that these skiffs are intended
for use in sheltered waters only and that we do not allow jigging for
rockfish along reef structures. Kayakers will have lots of opportunities
to go paddling in our Necky Santa Cruz kayaks with instruction available
to less experienced paddlers. We hope that you will join us and promise
you a wonderful experience that you will never forget! We welcome all
feedback, comments and ideas.
