Remark
Browning Pass, Transpac, Alaska.
Trip Commentary:
Vancouver to Juneau (northbound) Itinerary: Day 1 Early afternoon from
Vancouver. Late afternoon warmup dive among the giant cloud sponges at
Lasqueti Island. Overnight steam to Port Hardy. Day 2 - 3 Wake up this
morning ready to dive world famous Port Hardy and Browning Wall. We may
also visit the Deserter Islands, Dillon Rock and maybe even Seymour Inlet!
Amazing invertebrate life. Wolf eels and octopus. Rated by Rodale's magazine
as the best diving in North America three years in a row! Day 4 Morning
stop at the abandoned cannery town of Butedale and the chance to dive
the wreck of the Transpac (with it's spectacular orientation). We will
also be bear watching and keeping our eyes peeled for both black and grizzly
bears. This area is also home to the very rare and seldom sighted Kermode
Bear. Day 5 Our adventure continues with a morning arrival at the Alaskan
town of Ketchikan to clear Customs and stretch our legs. Later in the
afternoon we will visit small community of Meyers Chuck where the diving
"rocks" and there is a neat artists' cooperative on shore to
visit as well. Day 6-7 Wooden Island!! This is arguably the best dive
in North America (although it can be weather dependent). There will be
lots of opportunities to go diving today as well as doing some whale watching,
shore hike and maybe even an evening bonfire. The humpback whale behaviour
in this area is usually quite awesome. Day 8 Today is another great day
with a stop at the stellar sea lion colony at Yasha Island (and the chance
to get way up close with either our kayaks or your scuba diving gear).
More grizzly bear watching. And a soak in the Baranoff Hot-springs. Day
9 Wake up among the icebergs, waterfalls and glaciers of spectacular Tracy
Arm. Enroute, the crew will be keeping an eye out for a snorkel/dive/kayak
opportunity around a suitable iceberg. Visiting Tracy Arm is an amazing
experience and something that you will likely not forget for a long time.
Later in the afternoon we are planning on a hike up a salmon stream and
keeping our fingers crossed for a closeup visit with "brownies"
(which is what Alaskans call grizzly bears). Day 10 Dive sites will likely
include the wrecks of the Princess Sophia and the Princess Kathleen in
Lynn Canal. The Sophia is known as the worst tragedy in the North Pacific
(all 360 persons onboard lost their lives). The Kathleen is an intact
passenger liner laying on her side between 30 fsw and 120 fsw. Evening
arrival in Juneau (Auke Bay). Day 11. Morning disembarkation for either
a connecting flight home or a shoreside stay in Juneau (which is a neat
and interesting place to spend an extra day or two). Shore options include
a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier, taking the local tram up to the alpine
meadows, a heliseeing flight or cultural First Nations presentation (and
rafting trip?) by the local Tlingit.
