Trip Commentary:
Juneau to Vancouver (southbound) Itinerary. Day 1 and 2. Lots of great
activities for all interests. Divers will have the opportunity to dive
the wrecks of the passenger steamer Princess Sophia and passenger liner
Princess Kathleen. The Sophia is known as the worst tragedy in the North
Pacific (all 360 persons onboard lost their lives). The Kathleen is an
intact passenger liner laying on her side between 30 fsw and 120 fsw.
After the morning dive on Day 2 we will be getting underway for our favourite
salmon stream hike and a very high probability of grizzly bear sightings.
Day 3. We will get underway quite early and the crew will be scouting
out an iceberg to snorkel/dive/kayak followed by a cruise and exploration
of the icebergs, waterfalls and glaciers of spectacular Tracy Arm. Time
permitting, we will do an evening dive on the rarely visited wreck State
of California at Admiralty Island. The wreck is a steamship vertically
orientated with the bow at 100 fsw. Day 4. More exploration of Admiralty
Island which is home to the densest population of both grizzly bears and
eagles anywhere in North America. We will be stopping at the stellar sea
lion colony at Yasha Island (and the chance to get way up close with either
our kayaks or your scuba diving gear) followed by a soak in the Baranoff
Hot-springs. Day 5. Our plan for Friday is to spend the day around Wooden
Island which may well be the top dive site in North America! There is
also an excellent probability of spotting feeding humpback whales in this
area and you we'll definitely spend some time checking them out. Or even
kayaking with them if sea conditions permit. Day 6. After clearing Canada
Customs, there will be the opportunity to explore the Haida village of
Masset. This is a fantastic stop for anybody interested in First Nations
culture as well as 'birding' or just going for a walk. Afternoon departure
for the famous fishing hot-spot and great dive sites at Langara Island.
Anchor overnight. Day 7. We are planning on spending another day at Langara
with more diving, great fishing, kayaking, exploration of the beautiful
and deserted beach at Lepas Bay as well as a guided tour of the ancient
Haida village of Kiusta. Day 8 Promises to be a busy day with the choice
of a morning dive on the wreck of the Transpac (with it's spectacular
orientation) or a shore visit to the abandoned community of Butedale.
Later in the day, divers will have the opportunity to splash the sunken
steamer 'Ohio'. Day 9. After one of our last overnight runs of the trip,
you can expect to wake up in 'world famous' Browning Pass (or maybe Dillon
Rock) with more spectacular diving, octopus and wolfeels as well as activities
for all the other folks onboard. Anchor overnight. Day 10. On our last
full day at sea we will explore and dive in Queen Charlotte Strait. Orca
sightings are almost guaranteed. We'll be diving in the Stubbs Island
area as well as making a shore visit to Alert Bay. Day 11. Early afternoon
arrival in Vancouver.
