Remark
7 nights from Juneau to Prince Rupert
Trip Commentary:
Southbound -- Juneau to Prince Rupert (8 days/7nights) 7 night adventures
are ideal for guests are looking for a shorter trip and want to spend
as much as time as possible in Alaska. Our guests often fly into Juneau
on the day before boarding and spend time touring and looking around.
Shore options include a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier, taking the local
tram up to the alpine meadows, a heliseeing flight or cultural First Nations
presentation (and rafting trip?) by the local Tlingit. Otherwise, you
should fly into Juneau no later than early afternoon in time to board
the Nautilus at 1600. Day 1. Afternoon departure for a relaxing and scenic
dinner cruise of the Lynn Canal and likely our first sighting of humpback
whales before a warmup dive and anchoring overnight. Day 2 Lots of great
activities for all interests. Divers will have the opportunity to dive
the wrecks of the passenger steamer Princess Sophia and passenger liner
Princess Kathleen. The Sophia is known as the worst tragedy in the North
Pacific (all 360 persons onboard lost their lives). The Kathleen is an
intact passenger liner laying on her side between 30 fsw and 120 fsw.
Late in the day we will be getting underway for our evening anchorage.
Day 3. Promises to be a special one with a hike up our favourite salmon
stream hike and keeping our fingers crossed for grizzly bear sightings.
Later we will cruise and explore icebergs, waterfalls and glaciers of
spectacular Tracy Arm. Day 4. More exploration of Admiralty Island which
is home to the densest population of both grizzly bears and eagles anywhere
in North America. We will be stopping at the stellar sea lion colony at
Yasha Island (and the chance to get way up close with either our kayaks
or your scuba diving gear) followed by a soak in the Baranoff Hot-springs.
Day 5. WE are planning on spending the day around Wooden Island which
may well be the top dive site in North America! There is also an excellent
probability of spotting feeding humpback whales in this area and you we'll
definitely spend some time checking them out. Or even kayaking with them
if sea conditions permit. Day 6. Today we'll be visiting the quaint and
remote community of Meyer's Chuck with the opportunity to stretch our
legs ashore as well as doing a couple of great dives with a high probability
of spotting octopus, wolf-eels and the very rare prowfish. Later in the
day, we will stop in for a walkabout Ketchikan. Day 7. Welcome to Canada
and some great diving and exploring around Dundas Island. Later in the
day we will set sail for Prince Rupert and clear customs that evening.
Day 8. Morning disembarkation in Prince Rupert for your connecting flight
back home. During our southbound adventure we will likely spend 5 nights
at anchor and make 2 overnight transits. Please note that we operate with
the philosophy that one of the best things about expedition yacht cruising
is the flexibility to change itineraries 'mid-stream' and take advantage
of changing conditions. For example, if the weather is beautiful, and
the winds are calm, we might suggest diverting to the north end of the
Queen Charlotte Islands for a tour of an ancient Haida village, a stroll
along a deserted 2 mile long west coast beach or the exploration of a
bird sanctuary. The above itineraries are intended as an example only
and our actual routing may be different. Notes on the activities. There
are some excellent dives on the outer coast of Alaska as well as some
very interesting wrecks in the Juneau area. We will likely do 12 - 14
'feature' dives during an 8 day / 7 night trip. However, please remember
that these trips are the 'full meal deal' with lots of other activities
including kayaking, fishing, birding and shorehikes as well as upclose
viewing of icebergs, calving glaciers, spectacular scenery, black and
grizzly bears, humpback whales, orcas, natural hot-springs, etc. Fishermen
will have the opportunity to go fishing for salmon or halibut from our
small 8 hp skiffs. Please note that these skiffs are intended for use
in sheltered waters only and that we do not allow jigging for rockfish
along reef structures. Kayakers will have lots of opportunities to go
paddling in our Necky Santa Cruz kayaks with instruction available to
less experienced paddlers. We hope that you will join us and promise you
a wonderful experience that you will never forget! We welcome all feedback,
comments and ideas.
