Every year the world's greatest marine migration takes place off the South African Wild Coast. Millions of sardines follow the cold winter currents moving north toward the warm Indian Ocean, bringing with them thousands of predators: dolphins, sharks, whales, seals and marine birds.
2006 SARDINE RUN SEASON!
"The "run" this season was unbelievable! Over the 6 weeks we were operational from beginning June through to mid-July - there wasn't a single day that didn't yield action - in one form or another. The ocean was alive with all the usual suspects - a variety of shark: Copper, Dusky, Bull, Ragged-tooth and Tiger...and of course the omni-present Humpback Whales on their annual northerly migration. Did I mention tens-of-thousands of common dolphins, the odd bottlenose, and the several hundred thousand Cape Gannets that make up the mainstream sardine run predators? They were all there - in the numbers! Hell there was even a whaleshark interaction - very rarely seen this far south.
2006 turned out to be a "late" run - with the large volumes of sardines only coming through in early July - the predators however, were present in force from June 1st when we arrived - and the ensuing interactions over the next 6 weeks were, as always, quite unreal - the degree to which is reflected in our guestbook for this year.
Toward the end of June we started "hitting" bait-balls in their numbers - the ferocity of some these led some of our guests to make such comments as "this is extreme diving at it's finest"!
Once again we were reminded why this event is affectionately known as "The Greatest Shoal on Earth" - as a tour operator, we at SEAL feel very satisfied to have had a successful season, and to have made such a positive impact in the lives of our guests. As an individual - I feel a great sense of humility and gratitude to have witnessed this unique, annual phenomenon up close again.

Recent Report on June/July Sardine Run from a Dive Discovery guest!
From Kevin Hessee
"This is the cutting edge of Adventure. Mysterious & magical wildlife in the Ocean!" Intense Diving. This is what I call the 'Total Experience' it is not all about the diving, it is about that and more, the drop dead gorgeous Lodge on the cliff on the wild coast. The waterfalls, horse back riding, medicine man visit. The wild boat entries and exits and giant swells filled with super pods of Dolphins.................
The reason for the trip is not because of the millions of bait fish swimming a ridiculous distance for the winter; it's because of what follows them and feeds on them. A plethora of Dolphins, Sharks, Whales, Birds, Seals and Tuna. It is in fact one of natures spectacles and was definitely a life time experience, world class here.
Here is what you are guaranteed to see up close: Humpback whales, loads of big sharks (at least 5 species- bull, tigers, copper sharks, bronze & black fin ), seals & thousands of dolphins (Common and Bottlenose) did you know that the Dolphins are the rouges of the sea? They torment the whales! Gannats and Albaros are the common sea birds in the action.
They saw all this and very few Sardines! They stayed deeper as the water was too warm at 68 degrees, they come up more when cooler at about 62 to 63, however all the predators where there waiting for them!!!! Everywhere!
From the Ultra light (everyone gets to go up in it) they saw a giant pod of mantas, and sharks and whales!
The weather can be too rough some days to go out and hence all the incredible land visits, which are astounding. The weather can be cold as it is winter there, so dress warm!
If you are an adrenaline junky or want to be, this may be a trip for you to consider.
