Aldabra, Cosmoledo, Astove and Assumption *
Day 1 – 7
April : Flight from Mahé to Assumption Island. Guano mining
removed most of the original flora and fauna, but the beach is spectacular
and the reefs are excellent. Embarkation at Assumption Island. Afternoon
dive at Assumption.
Day 2 – 8
April : Early morning sail to Aldabra, the world’s largest
raised coral atoll.. Visit the research station, dive the west channel.
Many of the endemic land birds can be seen ashore, including Aldabra
Drongo, Aldabra Fody and Madagascar Sacred Ibis together with large
numbers of giant tortoises from the world’s largest population.
Evening search for sea turtles laying eggs on Grande Terre.
Day
3 – 9
April : Dive and visit the main channel of Aldabra, experiencing
the exhilaration of being swept along by the tide pat shoals of
both pelagic and reef fish to the shallow waters of the lagoon.
Visit the mangroves forest and the channel.
Day 4 – 10
April : Visit the Booby colony at Johnny channel and the world’s
second largest colony of frigatebirds (10.000 pairs of two species,
Great Frigatebird and Leser Frigatebird), snorkel at the mangroves
forest and the channel in hide tide.
Day
5 – 11
April : Visit and dive Passe Houareau (the East channel). Visit
the Aldabra Rail site to see the last surviving flightless species
of bird in the Indian Ocean Region. Evening sail towards Cosmoledo.
Day 6 – 12
April : Visit and dive the North Island of Cosmoledo. The bushes
ashore are filled with nests of Red-footed Booby, part of the largest
colony in the Indian Ocean.
Day 7 – 13
April : Visit the deserted settlement and dive the West Island of
Cosmoledo (Menai) where turtles abound. A race of MadagascarWhite-eye
(named menaienis) is unique to the island.
Day
8 – 14
April : Early morning sail towards Astove. Visit the abandoned settlement
including the incongruous Veevers-Carter house and old chapel, then
cross the island to the lagoon. Dive the West walls. Evening sail
towards Assumption.
Day 9 – 15
April : Disembarkation at Assumption, flight to Mahé.
