MV Yemaya

MV Yemaya - Cocos Island LiveaboardsDiving in Cocos Island National Park, Costa Rica

“The Island of the Shark”

Coco Island is the high point of a submerged volcanic platform. This platform plunges into abysmal depths very close to the island. Several principal ocean currents converge at Coco’s, transporting nutrient rich water which in turn attracts many marine species, giving these waters a very high rate of productivity.

The diving in Coco’s is characterized for its open ocean location and the variety and quantity of pelagic marine species, such as, Scalloped Hammerhead, Silver Tip, Tiger, Silky, Black Tip and Whale Shark. Along with large aggregations of Rays, Snappers, Tuna and Jacks.

Many large filter feeders frequent the island, such as the Giant Manta Ray and migratory Humpback Whales. Schooling Scalloped Hammerheads are a common on several of the dive sites.

Many dive sites have cleaning stations for Hammerheads and great variety of pelagic species. Silverado is a shallow cleaning station for the magnificent beast, the Silver Tip Shark!

The symbiosis and behavioral habits of many marine species can be observed around Coco’s.

Night dives on the sheltered side of Isla Manuelita provide an opportunity to see a river of White Tip Reef Shark. Normally inactive during the day, hundreds of these reef predators can be seen patrolling the reef in search of food.

The bathymetry of this volcanic terrace forms a variety of different dive site with varying characteristics, from sandy rocky terraces and islands, to deep water pinnacles and sea mounts. Coral reefs can be encountered in the sheltered areas of the bays, with the largest extensions found in the bays of Chatham and Wafer.

Visibility is variable depending on the time of year, with an average range of 100 ft / 30 mts.

Sea surface water temperatures on average of 28C / 79 F. Thermo cline levels are variable, depending on the currents and can reduce the water temperature by 10 degrees F.

Currents can be strong at times and vary in direction and speed, making drift dives a good option on some of the larger targets. Sea surface conditions can be choppy, depending on site location and local weather conditions.

Anchoring is not permitted on the dive sites. Access to the deeper sites of Alcyon and Punta Maria are via a line fixed by the dive master prior to the dive. Free descents and ascents are typical to access the sites. Safety stops are usually made drifting in blue water off the site.

Our Dive master will deploy a surface buoy when the dive group leaves the site to drift off into the blue water and safety stop level. Dives on exposed sites will be carried out during the morning dive schedule, for safety reasons.
