M/V Kairos
New Tanzanian Dive Sites Exploration
Have you ever really discovered and explored islands, reefs and wrecks ?
The Kairos Company intends to make an inventory of the main dives sites of Tanzania, Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. Each dive site will be studied, described. The Kairos Company will work with local specialists to find the best and famous dive sites but the main and interesting work will be done with our teams of divers. We will take aerial pictures, we will do cartography and we will dive in particular to collect information about Manta Rays, Dugongs, Sharks, whalesharks and wrecks.
The diving spots are selected according to criteria determined by the expedition leader. Some of them are unexplored due to their remote location or difficulty of access.
Diving Spots:
The main islands visited, depending on the schedule, will be either Pemba, Zanzibar, Mafia, Songo-Songo. A few dive spots have already been listed as possible locations to explore:
- Boribu reef, off Zanzibar, is registered as one of the best diving spots for studying pelagic fishes on the west coast. It is also known for its huge Barrel sponges, enormous gorgonians, large moray eel and lobsters.
- Mnemba Island is definitely the best diving spot to watch and study pelagic life on the northeast cost of Zanzibar. Visibility goes from 20 to 40 meters, depending on the season.
- Kichwani Reef is the best spot to encounter Manta rays but also Eagle rays, as well as different types of sharks, Napoleon wrasse and an impressive variety of coral species.
- Pemba channel : the deep channel going close to coastline created huge walls, hit by the Eastern African Coast Current (EACC), going northward, providing food supply in plenty and thus generating a perfect environment for marine life.
- Manta Point, its name says it all. Considered as the best diving site by many. Large groups of Mantas are commonly observed there. Moreover, the multiplicity of corals and marine life are a real pleasure for the diver's eyes.
Visibility usualy is about 30 meters, allowing to fully admire the wonderful walls and shallows surrounding the islands and coral reefs. The coastal waters of Tanzania and Kenya are very deep and famous for their large diversity of marine fauna. Encounters with Eagle and Manta rays, Whalesharks, Dugongs,Green turtles, schools of Barracudas, Hammer sharks, Tuna fishes are frequent in these waters. The marine flora is of an amazing diversity too, with a large range of fine corals and sponges.
The water temperature stays around 28°C (a 3 mm diving suit is enough but 5 mm is more comfortable for long immersions).
Please note we may encounter very strong currents during these dives.
The diving spots are selected according to criteria determined by the expedition leader. Some of them are unexplored due to their remote location or difficulty of access.
