Dive South Africa Safari

sharkThe Diving Safari is for the adventure diver who wants to do it all. To visit all the main tourist spots, as well as to dive all the major dive sites in the country. After having done this Safari, you will get the true feel for South Africa and you will then be in a position to pick and choose the sites to which you will want to return on your next trip to this truly captivating country.

Day 1:
Arrive Cape Town International Airport. Day spent sight seeing and exploring the beautiful Cape Peninsula including the majestic Table Mountain, Cape Point, Chapman's Peak Drive and Kirtenbosch Botanical Gardens. The next two nights are spent at the Avenue Protea Hotel in the quaint seaside village of Fish Hoek.

Day 2:
A full day diving in the Atlantic Ocean with the only 5 Star PADI dive charter in Cape Town. The actual sites that we will dive depend mainly on the weather and prevailing winds, either the western or eastern seaboards. The first dive will be on one of the many wrecks scattered around the Peninsula, and on the second dive we will meet the Cape fur seal on his home turf. A full tank dive with the playful and friendly Cape fur seal. This is a diving experience not to be missed.

Day 3:
A morning dive exploring the many wrecks and reefs around the Cape Peninsula and after lunch we start on our three hour drive through spectacular coastal mountain passes en route to the Grootbos Nature Reserve in Gansbaai where we will be spending the next two nights.

Day 4:
A full day spent on the water in Shark Alley, a narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, home to some 60,000 fur seals and which is 5km (3 miles) from the mainland. This is the natural hunting ground of the Great White Shark and the area in which they are most commonly encountered.

Day 5:
After a leisurely breakfast we depart Gansbaai for Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of the African continent and the true meeting place of the mighty Indian and Atlantic Oceans. From here we head inland and travel through the wheatlands of South Africa into the heart of the beautiful and well-known Garden Route. Our destination is the magnificent town of Knysna which is set on the banks of a large natural lagoon with opens into the Indian Ocean through the infamous and treacherous Knysna Heads. The next three nights are spent at the luxurious Ai Due Camini guest house.

Days 6:
Two dives off the coast of Knysna with the local dive charter.

Days 7:
An early start for the short drive to Plettenburg Bay and two dives on one of six dive sites off this once Norwegian whaling station.

Day 8:
After breakfast we continue up the Garden Route, through the Tsitsikamma National Park to the city of Port Elizabeth for our internal flight to Durban where we transfer to Umkomaas, a small seaside town on the South Coast, a half hour by car from Durban. This is the home of the Sea Fever Lodge where we spend the next three nights. We also meet with Andy Cobb, South Africa's Mr. Shark, who leads us through the NAUI specialist shark course.

Day 9:
Our first of three dives with Andy on the fabulous Aliwal Shoal.

Day 10:
Our second day with Andy searching for sharks. We end the day with a shark dissection to enable us to better understand these magnificent beasts.

Day 11:
The final dive on Aliwal. After breakfast, we depart for Durban, the headquarters of the Natal Sharks Board, before setting off into the heart of Zululand and our overnight stop at Kwabhekitbunga, the traditional home of Thomas Fakude. Our accommodation is in the traditional Zulu reed huts with bathrooms en suite, hot and cold running water and electricity.

Zebra Watching Wildlife PhotographersDay 12:
After breakfast we continue our journey through the heart of Zululand to Phinda Game Reserve, home to the land-based Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo. After our arrival and lunch, we head out into the sunset in open four-wheel drive vehicles for a sunset cruise with cocktails on one of the many rivers and lakes in the Phinda Reserve. Overnight Phinda.

Day 13:
After the early morning game drive and brunch we head for Sodwana Bay and its famous coral reefs. The next three nights are spent in romantic reed chalets of the Sodwana Bay Lodge.

Day 14:
An early call for the first of your two dives on the reefs of Sodwana Bay. All dives at Sodwana are best done in the early mornings as this is when the diving conditions and the visibility are at their best, before the wind gets up at about noon.

Day 15:
Another two dives on Sodwana. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the natural beauty of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park of which Sodwana is only a small part. Weather permitting, we may include a night dive.

Day 16:
Our last dive on Two Mile Reef before our six-hour drive through the Kingdom of Swaziland to Jatinga Country Lodge just outside the little country town of White River, where we overnight.

Day 17:
After a leisurely breakfast we enter the Kruger National Park and spend three to four hours exploring and game-viewing. We exit the Kruger Park at Orpen Gate and enter the Manveleti Private Game Reserve in which Honeyguide Tented Safari Camp is situated. After lunch we set out in open four wheel drive vehicles to game view in the cool of the evening. Sundowners are enjoyed out in the wilds of Africa, after which we return to camp in the pitch dark, viewing the nocturnal animals by the beam of a powerful spotlight.

Day 18:
Early morning game drive and bush walkin Big Five territory under the expert guidance of an armed game ranger and an African tracker. The heat of the day is spent resting up in camp, sitting in a hide watching the animals come down to the waterhole to drink. Overnight Honeyguide.

Day 19:
After the early morning game drive and brunch, we head back to Johannesburg, a journey that takes approximately five hours, for your return flight home.

TRIP COSTS:
